List of Best, Worst States to be a Taxpayer is Full of Surprises

The amount you pay in taxes has a lot to do with where you live in the United States. There are several factors to consider: income levels, property taxes and sales taxes, to name a few.

WalletHub analyzed how state and local tax rates compare to the national median in the 50 states as well as the District of Columbia.

The site compared eight different types of taxation in order to determine:  1) Which states have the highest and lowest tax rates; 2) how those rates compare to the national median; 3) which states offer the most value in terms of low taxation and high cost-of-living adjusted income levels.

The rankings are below, starting with the state with the least average annual state and local taxes. That’s Wyoming. As you go down the list toward the most expensive, you’ll see some surprises. For one, what’s Nebraska doing as the third most expensive, behind California and New York?

How about the category of “lowest real estate tax rates”? Hawaii is the lowest with 0.28 percent, followed by Alabama, Louisiana, Delaware and South Carolina.
